Harriott

This is my first fabric sculpture and where my passion for making the unique and unusual began.

Hi, my name is Emma, and if you are looking for a unique piece of sculpture or a personal present for someone special, then this is the place for you.

I have always had a love of animals and a love of art, so finding a way of combining the two together in such an exciting and original way was perfect. At university I enjoyed exploring different sculptural techniques; but always with a passion for texture and layering.

In February 2018, I attended a fabric sculpture course in which I discovered a product called Powertex. Powertex is an environmentally friendly fabric hardener which allows you to manipulate fabric and once dry, will stay hard forever. It is also waterproof so all the sculptures can go outside aswell as in. ‘Harriott’ the hare above, took 3 days to make and is made entirely from recycled materials; including paper, a glass bottle and fabrics. All everyday items that may otherwise have been thrown away; turned into something beautiful and totally unique. The colour I chose for this hare was a verdigris effect; to make her look like an old weathered bronze sculpture. The pigments are applied in several layers of dry brushing and its the colour that brings the sculpture to life. All of a sudden her individual character came out and it was then that I gave her the name ‘Harriott’ and gave her, her back story.

‘Harriott’ the curious hare who loves to spend her days picking spring flowers to decorate her beautiful ears. She is a quiet hare who likes to sit and contemplate the wonders of nature.

I have since learnt to weld and am now experimenting in combining the fabric sculptures with scrap metal work, glass and resin. I believe creativity is a fluid and evolving process, which is why each piece I create is unique and often unusual.
